I'm considering purchasing a DSLR. I've always been loyal to Canon, but will consider a Nikon. The 2 cameras I'm considering are the Canon EOS Rebel T1i or the Nikon D5000. What's your opinion as to which is better and why?

It's pretty much what you really want in a camera. Both cameras are great, but both have there flaws as well. I'm a Nikon guy my self, My first DSLR was the D60. Switching over to the D90 was a pretty smooth. But all the extra buttons was crazy.

Either camera is good, for quality pictures, the glass is were it's at.

Thanks and I agree that it's all about the lenses. Both manufacturers make great products. Any other input?

I got the D5000 recently because I had a Nikon D40 prior and it had no problems. I foind it really easy to use nad does not have too many buttons.
Great! What about the HD video? How did you like that feature?

check out www.kenrockwell.com he has a pretty good review of both camera's.

Plus 2 for ken rockwell, he has almost everything explained, honest reviews on the models, most information on photography equipment in one place.
Also, I shoot nikon. Currently have a d40 and d300.

i heard better reviews about the t1i, but doubt it's that much better than the d5000. but i went for canon at the end. i love my t1i, it's a great camera. however, since the t2i is out, u'd rather buy that instead of the t1i. t1i only shoots 1080i @ 20fps, but canon fixed that w/the t2i, so u'll get a un-crippled hd video

i read a few reviews today and they all said that the D5000 was just a D3000 with a couple of extra features but nothing so special that warrants the extra money. im no camera expert though, this thread just got me wondering so i went on the hunt for reviews.

Having owned the Nikon D90 and Canon 7D, I would say Nikon's image quality beat the hell out of the Canon.

In fact, the 7D would not take a sharp focused image of a my turtle through the aquarium glass.
