DSLR on a budget?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You can always look on Craigslist for a used something or other in that price range.

Ya I've been looking, problem being that where I live nothing is cheap so even the used craigslist stuff is expensive lol. People want hundreds of dollars for a 20 gallon setup, nevermind a nice camera. I'm going to keep looking though and will also look in the surrounding states too. I live in CT

I am a canon guy, so for me, I would look for a used canon 20d, 30d, etc. They shouldn't be more than a couple of hundred dollars. It's older, but my 20d is my backup camera and still takes good pics.

Nikon is a good option as well, so feel free to look at their base models that are a few years old. $300 is a tough budget, but you can make it work if you're good at bargain hunting. Glass will cost you a good amount as well, so be prepared for the true cost of a DSLR... the lenses.

I actually found a couple Canon 30d cameras on Amazon that are used. I may have to get one! What lens would I need for taking pictures of my fish or for my son's sports?

they don't show the price, but I'll tell you, it's $***.**
I bought the equivalent 10 years ago and have been very happy with it. and with it a little below what you were looking to spend you can get some extra batteries and memory-both are always nice to have more of.
excellent customer support too, the image sensor went out 3 years out of warranty and they replaced it and cleaned the camera, no charge.
just kidding, 219 is the price.

im a nikon guy.
You should be able to find used D70's for about $250.
Or better yet, search for a D80 maybe about $400.

D50, D70, D80, D90, D100, D200, D300, D700, D800, D7000, D1,2,3,4 can use all of Nikon lenses!
D40,60,3000, 5000 can only use DX lenses with a built in motor, those are the newer lenses.

So the first list can use AF automatic focus lenses from the 80's!

So id search out the 50, 70 or 80, then find yourself a good 50mm AF for $40 and you are good!
You can find plenty of people on ebay upgrading. I get all my gear used on ebay.
just find one with actuations (shots) less than 30,000. They are rated for well over 150k, but that will tell you that it was rarely used.

the 50 and 70 is 6.1mp, and the 80 i believe is 10.1mp.
but don't let the MP fool you.
a 8mp camera phone does not take better pictures than a 6.1mp Nikon D70 with nice glass.

Other thing is people often sell old film cameras, not realizing that those lenses will work on a DSLR.
The camera is worthless, but the glass is valuable.

Somebody sells grandpas old nikon N75 film camera which is worth $10, not knowing that his set has 3 lenses worth $100 each!

look in craigslist.
the D200 is a better camera than the D80.
I found two in your state for $375 and $400 on CL.
