Dual in-line Fluval Fx5 question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
With a sump the sky is the limit with the only thing preventing you from increasing your biocapacity would be space. You can make your own sump whatever size you want and run whatever size pump, and for $1000 you could make a sump that should be able to handle pretty much anything you throw at it within reason. Even a sump filled with k1 and using some fine filter socks will do the job.

The other thing that I would be hesitant about is the maintenance on the fx's. Depending on how you plumb them there might be dependencies, or just a huge pain in the butt to clean canisters all the time, which is why I love my sump.

If you have your mind set on a bunch of fx's then by all means go ahead, I am just pointing out some options as I will never go back after to canisters after I have run my sumps.

You could pick up an eheim 2260 second hand and replace the pump for an uprated model. Sell an Fx5 to cover costs. Sump is probably the best option space permitting.

I agree that a sump is a good thing. I run sumps on all my saltwater tanks. I never went with a sump on my freshwater ray tank because I already had the Fx5's. When I set up the first ray tank, I had two Fx5's running on it. Then the rays got an up-grade to a larger tank and I just went ahead and bought another Fx5 since the tank was set up with 3 over flows already. Now I just happen to have an extra Fx5 (4th) and thought I would add if for even more filtration.
The main reason I was thinking of adding it is this. My rays have pups just about every 6 months.
I use to keep a tank up and running just for the pups. Even when I didn't have pups the tank was running. But we just moved into another home and I decided not to have a dedicated pup tank up and running all the time. If I added the 4th Fx5 to the main ray tank. When I do have pups, I can take it off and add it to the pup tank and its an already seeded filter.

That makes sense but why not sell the three fx and run one so it could be moved for your pup situation?

So your saying sell 3 of the Fx5's, Run a sump and just run one Fx5 and use it when needing for the pup tank.
Mainly because I already have the Fx5's and see no reason to change the setup that is working.

canister filters flow tend to vary depending on the media and captured detritus and keeping two of them synced would be difficult causing one or both input/output to have high or low pressures where they aren't supposed to. I don't know if it would actually be a problem, but they aren't designed for it. and running just one would probably really slow it down.
they make over the edge U plastics, is there a reason you can't do that? making your own wouldn't be difficult.
for that matter, I think you'd be fine just pulling one of the sponges out of one of the three to put in the pup filter. should be plenty of bio for the reduced bioload. then you wouldn't have to run the fourth one unless you need it.
