My Breidohri. Over a year old, 10-12 inches, in a big tank with other Vieja. A larger Zonatus has started becoming aggressive, more dominant, and this Breidohri was previously the king of the tank. So I suspect there must have been some fighting, although I see no scales gone, bites, fins ripped--just bigger lips than normal.

And he acts more gentle than ever before. Still eating, though not at all like before. He just hangs back and waits for something to fall below the crowd. He used to get right in the middle of the crowd.

Think he's sick?

I have had cichlids dislocate their jaws, if so, it is fairly easy to snap the jaws back into place with your fingers.
With ducklips the tissue becomes necrotic and (at least when I tried to snap it back) was solid and wouldn't move.

The fish is looking worse, the lips are swollen a bit more now, and there's also new symptoms--white bumps on the face and close to the lips. Any idea what this is? Pics below. If it's ducklips, do I need to get him outta the tank with all my other fish? He's behind a divider now so he doesn't get beat up, but I'm worried about this being contagious?

my understanding it is a virus. and nothing for it, much like fish herpes. pristine water and low stress seems to be the best treatment for it. again nothing I have ever delt with just echoing from what i have read in the past and makes the most logical sense.

going to need to change font color, to dark to read.

Thanks, Jim. I'll run down and pick up a tank tomorrow. I'll have to order Kanamycin. I only have Nitro and Metro on hand. Can you tell from the picture that is what the fish has, or is that too hard to say.

The fish died. I got a 20 gallon tank, opened the box and it was cracked. Brought it back the next day and got an exchange, got home with the new tank and the fish was dead. It's a shame. Fish was a year old, about 10 inches, big head with a hump, perfect fins and great color. So, I'll be starting all over with a 3.5 (or smaller) inch Breidohri if I can find one.
