That sucks man. This happened to me a few weeks ago with my male chocolate cichlid. He made it 36 hours after the onset of symptoms. It broke up my breeding pair, but at least he will live on through his offspring.

So sorry to read about your fish. This can be such a devastating disease, and to date much is still not understood about it. Annemie Decostere is one of the lead authorities on this subject, and has completed a significant amount of research over the past several years. One thing we do now know from some of that research is that some species of fish are more susceptible to columnaris than others.

For anyone interested in additional reading on this subject.....

No other fish show symptoms. My Breidohri caught this a week or two after a Zonatus in the tank kinda took over the tank. Zonatus started chasing fish around more, doing what cichlids do when they realize nobody can stop them. I never saw any fights with the Breidohri, no fin damage or bite marks on scales, but still--I think the whole episode raised stress levels for all fish in the tank.

I saw a post of another Breidohri that died of this recently. Maybe Breidohri are one of the susceptible species.

My Breidohri caught, and recovered from, Hex 2-3 months ago, too. Perhaps he was just more disease prone.

Shame to lose him, though. He was around 10 inches, had him about a year. It takes a long time to grow a fish to that size and condition. I'm gonna order a couple more Breidohri because I really like them alot, but it's like starting all over.

It DID take about 8 days for this to kill him. If I'd had a 20 Gallon tank in the closet ready to go, I coulld have separated and medicated at the first sign of swollen lips. I just didn't know having never seen it before, and didn't have the tank on hand.

Now, I HAVE seen it and know what I"m looking at next time I see it. And now I do have a 20 gallon hospital tank and a sponge filter in my sump---just waiting for this to happen again.

Experience.
