Hey I own a piranha tank and I'm supposed to dim the lights using electrical tape but I do not have any..

I was wondering if it was safe to wrap duct tape around the aquarium lights or will it burn?

Duct tape is safe for any and every application known to man........

...Sorry, had to...

It doesn’t hold up to exhaust pipe level heat very well... but I would expect it to hold up to fluorescent bulb level heat just fine... but probably not incandescent bulb heat...

Although I can think of several better ways to dim the light than wrapping tape around the bulb...

Window tinting film on the glass would be ideal...

thin fabric laying on the glass tops would work too... If the light is hot enough to catch the fabric on fire it's hot enough to melt the glue on the tape and stink until it falls off...

While I agree it would work...

My hesitation to use spray paint would be if you goof up and put too much on, it's a paint to scrape it clean and start over... as scraping just a little off would be exceptionally difficult...

A thin piece of cloth is very cheap... you probably have an old T shirt you could cut up and use... plus it's very versatile that you can double it, triple it, then go back to double, change it out for a different color to give it a colored hue... all with minimal investment and minimal effort...

If you use duct tape, the adhesive will degrade over time, especially with the heat. You'll have a mess on the bulb and be looking for another answer.

The spray paint idea is good. If you need to remove it, just use a solvent like lacquer thinner or acetone. Tinting the glass on the hood is another good idea if you have a hood. Blocking light with cloth is another idea I like, providing the heat isn't too much. Dimmers don't work on fluorescents.

I think duct tape should be your last resort for light reduction.
