They probably do pretty well selling eight dollar fish for three times the price.

you think they would but look at how many lfs have closed down in the last year.

If I was the employee, I would take responsibility for my own stupid mistake and I wouldn't blame the customer since it is obviously not their fault.

Clearly it is the customer's fault if they knowingly walk out the door with a item priced at $40 after paying only $10. The LFS employee made a mistake, the customer knowingly ripped them off.

In my experience you come out farther ahead by being a good trustworthy customer than you do by being an opportunist willing to take advantage of any mistake someone makes. Building a relationship and trust with the LFS has got me a lot of tremendous legitimate deals that far exceed the value of a quick $30 ripoff.

Yes but you are always responsible for yourself. You have no control over other people but as an adult you should have control over your own life and behavior. There is no way to justify it. If it is all about teaching people lessons, wouldn't it have been a lot better to just tell the employee their mistake? Doing what is right is being responsible. Apparently the OP didn't learn this. You say that we should own up to our own mistakes. Then why continue adding insult to the soft-robbery by calling the LFS dumb? This is not the self-responsibility that you are preaching,drgnfrc13. Teaching lessons by being cruel is a poor lesson taught no matter how you spin it. But these are things that as a grown man I have learned to embrace and teach to my little children. I learned from my mistakes and from those around me so I can teach my children how to be...Responsible.

Like I said before, I'm done arguing. We obviously have different definitions of responsibility.

I disagree, if you make a mistake, you take responsibility for it and you learn from it, you don't look down upon someone else for not holding your hand and correcting you, THAT IS NOT THEIR RESPONSIBILITY. No matter how many times you all bring up "honor" and "common decency" that doesn't change the fact that you are not responsible for other peoples mistakes just because you don't point them out to the person. You can't expect people to do that. I agree that the gloating part is a little over the line, but I see nothing wrong with letting people make their mistakes, and I guess I'll just have to leave it at that.

Next time a cashier gives you change for a $10 when you actually gave her a $20, make sure you don't hold her hand and correct her. Let her make her own mistakes and take responsibility for them.

Morality is not conditional or situational. Right is always right, and wrong is always wrong. The rules don't change based on whether you benefit from a mistake or are harmed by it.

People remember things a lot better when they're uncomfortable. I would argue that lessons can be taught better with at least some form of distress. However, that being the case, the topic creator didn't teach anybody a lesson. In fact, unless his LFS is managed well, I doubt anybody noticed.

In my opinion, it was the store's fault for hiring employees who would make mistakes like that in the first place. Be a little more selective, people. A local Taco Bell of mine hired a teenager who didn't even know what wheat was.

Since the kid did not know what wheat was does that mean you should get free tacos? Not sure why you need to know what wheat is to work at taco bell anyway it is not like they are chefs making things from scratch back there, but that is getting off the topic.

I am sure every LFS and every taco bell would love to be able to hire the best and brightest around, but of course they have to find the balance that allows them to stay in business and remain profitable.

I am sure my LFS would love to have the marine section staffed with marine biologists, but I am not gonna pay $100 a clown fish just so they can pay the best staff.

How would you like all this stuff that we are talking about to happen to you?
Would it be a good lesson for you if the store owner took the difference out of your minimum wage pay? This happens. Or how about fire the incompetent fool that last you $$ Or if it happens enough then the LFS that you love goise out of biz like all around me has? Nothing left but one very small LFS-walmart and petsmart.
