LOL just came back from petsmart and overheard a couple talking about oscars. the girl says "we should get 4-5 of these, they aren't territorial"

i'm sure hoping they have a HUGE tank!

The problem is that most of the time there are a ton of fish in each aquarium at the LFS. Most people don't realize how big something gets. I'm not claiming ignorance is acceptable, but the conditions they are kept in can be misleading if the customer is allowed to assume.

I do the service for my lfs and im always stopping people from doing stupid things like "a school of 10 oscars and an aro in a 45gal"(that was last week)

Oh please, Mods, Please, spare us from another one of these threads!

i agree, they aren't relatively the most territorial or aggressive, it was just the overall conversation, one of those "you had to be there"...

I am a stupid petsmart customer. I went there last night, and there were two small frontosas in their $1.50 african cichlid bin (NOT supposed to be there). I asked the guy if he knew anything about fish. He said he knew a little. I asked if the fish in that tank would do well in a 10 gallon just to see. He looked at the tag (which said they needed a 29 gallon) and said they would need a bigger tank. Since he looked at the tag, and since I had never seen him in there before (I go by at least once a week), I knew he had no idea. I bought the two frontosa for $3.00 with his blessings.

Fish are fish, and a good deal on a healthy fish is a good thing no matter where you buy from. I have bought fish from bait stores and asian markets before to put in my tank... if the price is right and the fish is healthy, all the better.

Oh, and my point was that if you listened to our conversation, I would have sounded like an idiot, yet I like to think I am not.

NO, the frontosa did not go in a 10. They are in a 55, I am thinking I am going to grow them out and then trade them in for credit at an lfs that sells them for $50 at 6".

i think most of us understood where you were going with your story.

however the conversation i heard was between two people who were together, as if one was showing the other the ropes in fishkeeping.

either way, good frontosa purchase.

The hardest thing is getting people educated in what is good fish keeping practices. People don't view the fish like they would a cat or a dog. The sellers (most not all) do not take the time to inform many times because they themselfs do not know. Its the dirty side to the hobby, but really its how a lot get into it in the first place. Make the mistakes, those who learn grow it and keep it good!
