Dumbest thing you've done in/to aquariums?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I setup a 300G rubbermade and built a sump for it. I was missing a fitting for the return and the store was closed so I just left extra hose on it and shoved it into the tank. taped it to the side and figured it would be fine till I got it fixed up right. well I was right it worked fine and never went anywhere. the problem was it ran to the bottom of the tank and 3 weeks ago I came home (with the fitting I needed to do the job right cause I finally remembered to pick it up) I walked down stairs and the runnermade had 3" of water in it and 250Gallons where on the floor. the pump quit and it syphoned it all out of the big one. My Alligator gar was'nt pleased with me and neither was my dog. he sleeps in there and there was almost an inch of water on the floor. I used my python to suck most of it up and removed all the carpet. 1/2 hr after I was done the downstairs toilet sprung a leak and I got it shut off called the landlord and he came over to see for himself. he saw the wet carpets and everything and they have since all been removed and replaced as well as he let me repaint the basement and run a better water line inthe wall to the fish room. inthew end I have a better looking place and thank God he never asked if all the water damage was from the toilet. oh and he put a new pump in the basement sump so it won't fill up again lol.

When I was 12, I bought a brand new ten gallon tank. The tank had dust in it from sitting on the store shelf so I decided to wash the tank with hot water. I realize the glass was to hot to touch so added cold water. My tank cracked and there went my hard earn 30 dollars. I will never do that again.

my friend's kid put 2 packets of green kool-aid in the 10 gal tank because he thought since he liked kool-aid that the fish would too.

Unplugged the heater on my frontosa tank while doing a water change and finally remembered to plug it back in 3 days later! The water was 58F!
No deaths, thank god. ;)

No really serious blunders...

When I was first starting (I was 10yrs old...) I had a 10g tank with one pleco, 4 guppies, 5 neon tetras, 1 betta, and 2 goldfish... (4 yrs later it was looking crowded and I upgraded to a 55g - the pleco was 8", the goldfish were 6"...):WHOA:

I got ich in the 10g quarentine and treated it with medication, misread and doubled the dose... Fish looked stressed, but thankfully none died.

I overfilled a few buckets, but they were in the sink so no harm done. After that I got an egg timer with a loud bell.

But I have many years for things to happen so I can add them to the blunders list.

The dumbest thing ive ever done to my aquarium was stick my wee wee in the piranha tank...not a good experience

my wife used the spare socket in my extension i use for tank equipment, i switched it off at the mains like i normally do without thinking about it being plugged into my tanks adaptor.
all my equipment was switched off over night for about 15hrs. i realised the next morning when i noticed the room was awfully silent, no filter humming and i tried to switch on the light, then panic hit me.
in a panic i just switched the equipment back on and dumped a huge amount of prime in to try and help, the temp was around the 18 degrees C mark. i didnt want to do a waterchange as i felt it would stress out the fish even more. after this i have realised that Seachem's prime saved my fish.

all survived and are doing well. there is now a ban on using the spare sockets on the extension unless its for more fish equipment.
