Dumerils not eating

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I dont think there is any concern at all . All my snakes go off feeding now and than .

Only the insect eating small snakes like worm snakes and green snakes eat on a regurler basis or will if they can but not the mammal eating bunch.

sounds like your temps need some serious adjustments:eek:. 80 seems real low to me for a monitor. they ussually like it hot like 120 or so. try bumping up the temps and i bet she will be more apt to feed

Well, I moved her to a 20 Long. I figure it's much easier to heat up a smaller environment and sure enough i'm right-it's already 86 degrees and holding.
She looks good; no mites, no URI and her eyes are nice and clear (A little scuffed but she's constantly burying herself so i'm not surprised). Hopefully in the next few days she'll grab a meal.

A Dumeril's is a Boa Constrictor btw, not a monitor.

I used to live in Long Island and winter temps in the house ranged from 65 to 68 it was a big pain keeping temps in glass tanks. Other than that tanks are great and use them here.

In PVC cages it was super easy. A PVC cage with screen top needs 1/4 the watt to hold temp as glass tank.
I prefer bulbs as they heat the air also and in big enough cage you do get cooler spot and warmer spot.

I mention this just incase as your boa gets bigger you opt to look at other enclosures big apple herp in long island has nice ones but regardless plastic is just easier as far as holding heat with way less watts .

Yeah, I got caught with my pants down with the sudden change in temp. It went from summer to winter overnight here and I assumed turning the lights back on would take care of it. At one point in the summer, my snake tanks got to 100 degrees!
I agree with you about finding a tub but I was hoping the 40 breeder would work for a few years. I may cover the tank to keep the heat in but need to be creative to avoid melting plastic.
Glass doesn't hold heat well but it sure does conduct it.
I try to be careful with overhead lighting but prefer it as well.

Realy small tank, what are the humidity, tenperatures, and surface temperatures of the basking spot?
A monitor that big should not be kept in anything that small.
Also, what substrate is it on?
