I am getting an asian spitting cobra soon but I need to know what is legally classed as a double door system, which of these is legal? The left one is what im going to be making if I dont hear anything back. The vivarium is the normal vivexotic 4ft vivarium but the "outter tank" is going to be made of perspex with a further sliding or double swing door with lock. Please reply people or lets see your best attempt at drawing a different design.

Cheers,

Wait wait, I really don't think you should be making a venomous cage, but I wouldn't be too sure of what you have learnt about the subject and perhaps will be creating a cage without the commercial flaws.

Lots of people on here asking about venomous recently has me worried...especially since all of you are asking about GETTING venomous..... and not about what it takes to get them....which is a pretty important step....
Custom building a hot cage is probably not a good idea unless you are a VERY skilled craftsman... there can be absolutely NO room for error....

What experience do you have already with hots?

Do you need a double door system or you just want one for piece of mind? I assume you still need a lockable room?

Double door is required when it comes to hot snakes depending on where you are, but it's just smart keeping. Personally, I'd want space enough to work between the two doors. 1 foot is enough to get your snake into a tight spot you can't get it out of without a lot of work if something goes sideways. The 4 ft length will also get small when you have a 5-6 ft snake crammed in there that can spit it's body length out at you.

What species are you getting, there are 4 or 5 "Asian" spitters.

Sylvias, Kieth has been thinking about getting these guys for a while and has done his research. I feel like he has a good enough head on his shoulders to do fine with them and this post shows that it is not something he is rushing into.

That being said, I Think that the double door should not be spaces so that the snake can get in between the walls. I would suggest going for something only a cm or two between the inner cage and second barrier. This way it is still enough room to have a latch of some sort on the inside and a lock on the outside and prevent an adult spitter from getting into a tight spot which can be very tricky.

Another way that I have seen it done is with a larger custom made barrier that the main enclosure sits inside of- inception style. Then you could open and lock one tank from the top (or side or wherever) and then take the other out when you need to access it. The only issue with this is how to remove the snakes enclosure safely and easily. This works best with smaller tanks but it may give you an idea.

I am not a huge fan of double doors but if I am correct, your country requires them. Ask your officials if you can have the snakes in a dedicated, sealed room. That way you could add weather stripping to the door, screening to any vents and locks to the windows and door and vivariums and be set. I think that is the ideal set up when it comes to safety and ease.

Sorry I meant are you required to have a double door system such as shown above as well as an appropriate locked room? Or can you have a double door system as shown instead of a purpose room? To be honest, your council should be able to tell you what you need to do, but I know some are more helpful than others with this kind of thing. Find any keepers close to you on RFUK or captivebred or any other forum?
