Just like the title says, anything that is related to dwarf Crenicichla post in here. Trying to focus the database on the dwarfs a little more, since they are so interesting and there are so many questions about them.

If you have any questions, or need help with IDing please post them here.

We've been discussing Crenicichla notophthalmus for weeks now. Trying to figure out if mine are actually notos or sp. 'orinoco'.

I originally thought they were notos, can't really say for sure now. I know mine have the seperated first three rays, but not sure of the extensions now. Once I move them to the 125gal I'll be able to a closer look I guess. Also, the first three rays are black. So I not entirely sure. Perhaps they are sp. 'orinoco' after all. The females I've had are all red ocelli though...

If anyone has Crenicichla notos. and are uncertain as to if they truely are or not, post pictures of them in this thread. :) Try to make a database to help with dwarf cichlid ID. :)

Here are some pictures of mine that are in question. Need to get some more current pictures of them.

My true noto's only had about 1/4-1/3" extensions, more like a ram than an cac apisto. My colombian cf. 'wallacii' had seperation of the first 3 dorsal fins but no extensions past the regular length.

In your second pic Peanut, the dorsal looked similiar to those so-called 'wallacii' from Colombia. In your third pic it looks like a bit more extension, not sure if it's the same male or a later pic.

These aren't mine, I owned them before I even knew about online sites and photographing fish ... but the 3rd pick down shows about the same length extension as the ones I had. If you enlarge the pic, you can see the third dorsal spike reaching above the mouth of the save, a good 1/3" or so above the 4th ray.

Yesh they were both pictures of the same pike. :) Since I've taken those pictures the rays seem to have gotten more prominent. Maybe I'm just seeing things because I want to though.

We need to get some accurate pictures of sp.'orinoco', wallacii, and notophthalmus so we can compare them.

i need to get some pics tonight. from what ive seen in my males. there are no extensions or separated rays in the dorsal at all. my males are still small so i dont know if that plays a factor.

keep trying. what are your water paramters?

i just mixed my two males with my two females. one pair in each tank. females were in the 20g and the males were in the 40. the small female went into the 40g and hid under the driftwood all night. the larger male went into the 20g with the larger female and he tried to go into her hiding spot under some driftwood. she didnt like the company.

looking for suggestions. should i have seperate pairs in each tank or put them all in one tank?

Here you go.

These were sold by Jeff as Cr. cf. "Orinoco regani"

beta - I'd lean towards yours being Crenicichla cf. wallacii 'Colombia' due to the orange rimming of the female's dorsal pattern.
