Dwarf festae..... (pic)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i bought six escondido in november and one of them hasn't grown at all its still 1.5" and all the others are about 4.5" , i even moved the small one to a separate tank tried worming it and it eats like a little pig but still the same size so i'm fairly sure it's going to stay that way now.

I have the same with a smaller species biotodoma cupido. I have 5, two are approaching 3-4 inches, 1 x 2.5 and two are 1.5. The two little ones eat like pigs and are more eager and up front than the big ones, but they never grew up. I wormed them etc. I really thought I would lose them but they seem fine other than size.

Thats what i got going on with these festaes that little one in the picture is the one that is always up at the top of the tank waiting for it to open so they can eat and the second the food hits the water it goes crazy..... Its so greedy when it comes to eating It attacks the other bigger ones.... Well only time will tell......

I had a similar situation with a group of synspilum that I raised to adulthood (10-12 inch mark). 5 of them stayed very close in size where as one lone indiviual never got above 4 inches.

I think it probably is at the bottom of the hierachy which means it wont get as much food as the others there for grows at a much slower rate, another reason could be that it has got some sort of difficiency such as a certain hormone that stops or slows its growth most likley due to a smaller gene pool for captive breeding where most are probably inbred.
