Dwarf Hairgrass Compatability- HELP!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Uprooting is definitely going to be your main issue...

...and those roseline sharks? They're great at uprooting stuff when food falls around the plants. In particular my roselines uprooted all of my dwarf baby tears, dwarf hairgrass, and most of my micro sword. Granted it was a school of 6 at 5"-6" each, but they can reach that size in a year. I actually ended up selling my school and now I'm working on a 4-leaf clover carpet.

Just adding to this, with no intention of it turning it into an argument... (sometimes people flip out lol) :)

I wont disagree with baby tears uprooting easily. In fact I've had a few 2" corys that have managed to do it (I'm not using sand?). Anyway, he intends to make a carpet. I've had no success making hairgrass spread out and from what I've read online, other people struggle with it to. The baby tears on the other hand, I cant stop it from spreading.

To original poster:

If you plan on buying enough to make the whole carpet, by all means go with the hair grass. If you want it to spread over time with little effort, then I highly recommend the baby tears. But either way I'd recommend trying a small amount of whatever you choose before spending large dollars on a whole carpet.

You may also want to look into java moss. I hear that stuff spreads like hornwart, and can take over the tank if you let it. I've never kept it myself so idk for sure.

Dwarf hair grass (at least for me) has been steadily spreading... Although maybe that could do with me always trimming them down, and having ferts etc?

No I do plan on running dual filters at all times. And doing water changes regularly. As of now what I have done is purchased a 15 gallon tank, setup it up with and amazon sword, wisteria, and DHG. Along with that a Chinese Algae Eater and an Otocinclus. I was thinking of A) experimenting with the growth and success of these plants (in particular the DHG obviously) and B) IF I successfully create a flourishing DHG carpet; I can simply move it to the larger tank in bits and pieces to see how it does.

I'm taking all advice into consideration and will try the Java Moss or Baby Tears if this doesn't pan out.

I plan to do a large 125-150 fw tank. I only plan to have a couple of balas. I'm looking forward to a large aquascaping project. Ps If I were you I'd get rid of either the chinese ae or re-home your otto. The algae eater can get aggresive as It grows and the little otto's need at least 4 to be happy. It's kinda of like rooming a pitbull with a pomeranian.

Also, the Chinese algae eaters in my experience with them, tend to stop eating algae when they get older, and develop a taste for fishes slime coats if the fish is large enough...

But eitherway, keep up updated on your progress...
