^ That is a Blue Ring octopus, yes its seen in the aquarium trade (albeit a bit rare), and its also one of the most deadly toxic marine animals out there which can kill you in literally minutes...

I myself at one stage considered setting up a tank for one, but common sense and my g/f are sort of keeping me from setting one up...

So in other words, this is not the type of pet / animal you go out to stick in a tank without first knowing EVERYTHING about it...

Are you sure? Wikipedia would HAVE to mention this. I think you are referring to a different species I'm talking about the Caribbean dwarf octopus NOT the blue ring octopus UNLESS they are the same species? Hmmm...

So assuming you actually do manage to find a compatable pair of the hapalochlaena, manage to get them established and comfortable, and with enough life time left, what are the chances of breeding them? Realisticly? Also keeping fresh genetics comming in etc. A serious sustained breeding program. - N

Another thing, how many times ideally would they lay a "clutch" of eggs in there short life time? Is anyone credible doing this right now

No idea, post this in the reef section or look it up. Considering the dangerous nature of this species its very likely nobody on mfk has 1.

Yes but rattlesnake venom is curable and it takes several hours to take effect... I think.

no there actually is a such a thing, that isnt a blue-ringed octopus. The one in the pic OP posted is a blue-ringed. Its called the Caribbean pygmy octopus. they are a shell dwelling species with a lifespan of around 6 months and theyare non toxic. anyway here's a pic I found on the interwebs

I've yet to see a credible timeline on envenomation. So much stems on body mass, hydration, age, health, and allergies. However, each blue-ring octo holds enough venom at one time to kill 26 adults within minutes of envenomation.

The bottom line in keeping ANY octopus...they dont live very long. Less than a year, and thats if you are lucky and have perfect water. The only Octopus that have lived for more than a year in captivity is the Pacific Giant Octopus and that was in a public display. I dont think it made it past 5yrs...maybe less...I need to look it up.
Anyway, octopi(?) are sooo cool, but not long lived.
