I finally got my 50 gallon dwarf cichlid tank up and running. Right now I have two apistogramma borelli males an apistogramma agassizi male and two crenicichla compressiceps (one of which I don't think will make it since I he can't close his mouth and is breathing super fast) thread about that here www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/threads/mouth-stuck-open-fast-breathing.678182/

I also have a little swamp darter that was free in there too because the pet store didn't know what it was when it came in with their feeder guppies.

Anyway I was wondering if there was something I could get for the top of the tank. Something small but active. I was contemplating threadfin rainbows but I feel like the pike will make short work of them or neons when they grow a bit. My LFS also had Celebes halfbeaks.

Any ideas?

It's VERY heavily in planted to the point where the water chemistry is reading like there is nothing in there right now.

Maybe a bigger tetra species would work with the exception of Buenos Aries,

Go bigger than you think you need. My compressiceps would kill any fish it could it their jaws wrapped around the head, so even though say lemons look large enough to not be eaten, they will most likely still be killed.

Things like bleeding hearts or colombians should work.

Thanks @darthpike bleeding hearts look nice especially mature males.

Though if it is a 3ft 50 breeder, I would worry there wouldn't be enough length for a shoal of bleeding hearts. One of the 4ft 50's would be better for them.
