I have had what I call white-tipped tetras, Seriously fish calls them Ornate. They look very similar to the bleeding hearts but are a little smaller. I had them in a 3-ft 65 gallon tank and it seemed totally appropriate. They hang out together and are pigs at feeding time. I think they're pretty cool fish.

I have also had marbled hatchetfish, and they are smaller than the normal hatchets so work well in a 3-ft tank.
I've also had with the hatchets, some "hockey stick" pencilfish. I don't know if they're too narrow bodied to be a meal for your pike (I don't know anything about pikes) but the way they hang out at the surface at an angle is pretty cool. The males have dark red patches on their rear fins & tails, and they chase each other around a little more than the hatchets (more activity, but not crazy.)

All of these fish like buddies.
