my brand new fire eel is sick it lays on its side and is breathing hard it was fine then it turned wight i'm really worried i tessted the water and it had really high nitrates it spiked up to 80ppm i did a 50% water change and added salt anybody seen this befor none of my eels have ever done this

yeah just a few days ago this happened in two of my tanks. im not sure what it was but someone told me it was high ph and the other fish in the tank were used to it. im not sure how true this was but i did a few water and filter changes and it was back to normal in a few days. keep up on ur water changes, nitrates can be very harmful. i have to do a 25% water change every day to keep my nitrates down because i have too many fish in my tank, plus i overfeed.

well i didn't make it i can try to post pics dang i really liked him just got it to eat out of my hand i don't know what happened it just turned wight and started to shack and jerk and satyed up side down even when i tried to move him

Sorry for the loss. :[ The title made me think you were coloring it. :\

prob nitrate poisoning your other fish(if at all) are prob used to it but your fire eel was a new addition and so felt it more, immediate water changes may have saved him but you can never tell exactly

haha yah it kind of does look like that doesn't it but i like the colors of the fire eel but a wight one would be kind of cool i think i probly would of liked the color it turned if it wasn't dyeing :(

yep sorry my camera still won't work but i don't think it was to healthy in the first place it wasn't the one i told the guy at the store to get it did seem kind of lightly colored looking at pictures of other eels

are the cats the only other fish in the tank?? if so catfish and other bottom feeders are less susceptible to water problems. i have a dempsey that got ick, and the other fish (ornate bicher, pleco) didn't have a problem..
