good question. i find that it depends on what kind of wood you have. yes it helps but some pieces still float.
this project was all about releasing the tanans though.
 
thanks. well i ended up running out of wood about 12 hrs into the boil. half way through i had to add more water (about half) do to evaporation from steam. the water was pretty much dark brown to black.i want to do a complete water change and start again.
 
So cool. I want to add some wood but ive been soaking it for wayyy too long (Still releasing tannins.( GF is pissed she cant use the front bathrooms bathtub as theirs driftwood in it. not to mention tannin stains ) Been draining the water daily and adding hot water but it just needs more time.

even after the boil its still leaches very little but it does. it takes many years to cure.
