I have 5 Electric Blue Jack Dempsey's. I think a spike in PH killed one of my Elecric Blue Jack Dempsy'. Over the last 2 days, up to 8-0 seems to have done him in. Any other experiences like this? I started readg this evening what causes PH Spikes. Should be interesting. I'm trying to set up the optimal environment for these fish, seems like it might be difficult.

How big is your tank, how big is your filter and what does the media consist of?
I have 3 ebjd. Avoid bloodworms(imo), due to risk of parisites. I feed hikari cichlid gold, and do weekly water changes. They also enjoy flake food.
It could of been an ammonia spike. What else is in the tank? Could have high ammonia.. Give a little more details and I will do my best to help you out, that stinks that you lost one don't want to lose another! I always over due my filtration.
Welcome to MFK!!

29G,
Parameters: Nitrate: 40; Amonia 0;Nitrite 0; PH 7.8-8.0!!
Planted, natural CO2,
Filter Eheim 2028 w/prefilter and UV Filter
Seachem Red Subsrate
Has wood for decor
25% water changes weekly
mates: 3 zebra loaches, 1 Bristlenose leco, 1 Chinese algae eater, 1 rainbow shark, several zebra snails

You do have a high pH, 8.0 is high I keep mine at 7.2. If I were you I would get rid of the Chinese algae eater. There name is a fake worthy they arn't good algae eater nor are they chinese. They also produce large amounts of waste. 5 ebjd's is also alot for a 29 gallon, but if they are small that filter should be taking care of the waste. The algae eater would cut bioload tho, I think your main problem is to many fish making a high bioload, thats why your pH is changing so much.

I think the nitrates at 40 would be more of an issue than your PH. Especially if your PH is stable with no large fluctuations. My PH out of the tap is 9.2 and it settles in my tank around 8-8.2 and I keep SA/CA cichlids with no trouble at all. I do weekly water changes of 50% and my nitrates never exceed 15-20. However, my water is also soft (I know strange mix) which suits my current stock but I had to add buffers, epsom salt when I had Rift Lake stock. I find stable values sometimes outweigh ideal values if they fluctuate.

I didn't see your nitrate 40ppm is high. I have always heard below 50 all the time, but you ideally want them below 25ppm. Try using nitrogen removing filter media.

i have 6 EBJD and i feed them NLS and frozen bloodworms is that fine because i always wonder if they could get a parasite, but the bloodworms are dead right ¿?

I always stay away from bloodworms because ebjds are known to have problems with parasites, and people on here have had problems with frozen bloodworms. What is NLS? If your worried just feed hikari and flakes, I think pellet foods help prevent spread of invasive parisites feeders or bloodworms can introduce to your aquarium. My ebjds loves small hikari gold pellets

I breed and raise EBJD's and my PH is around 8.0. My fish have no problem in it and breed out of control. The fry are perfectly fine as well. I think you might have bought some weak EBJD's. Where did you get them from? I would buy from a breeder, not from a local fish store and you will have much more sucess with them.

I agree with last post, I think mine might be week. I've had them for 30 days. 4 grown like crazy, 1 is kind of a runt. from 1 inch, they're close to 3 now. I've read that they're likely to die beore 3 inches. I never feed bloodworms. I also use anti paasite small fish food (non-medicated) for these fish initially. Every single fish in all of my tanks go crazy over it. Just to make clear, these 5 are dispersed in different tanks, not the same one! I isolated my golden gourami, which startd to turn aggressive as well. Anyone interested n a beautiful gold gourami with dark srtipes?
