Dying Ray

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Ouch Mike. Poor girl. As corny as it sounds maybe she appreciated the one more day. Don't beat yourself up, sometimes there are blood diseases or genetic disorders that have nothing to do with your care of the creature. Mine went 26 days and everyone helped me throw everything I could at it, sometimes you just can't help it, doesn't only happen with fish either. Honestly man, that importer should have never sold it to you without getting it stable and plump enough to survive an adjustment period before he shipped it out. I feel that not enough care was put into the sale of this wild caught ray personally, I don't know the whole story and I am jumping to a conclusion, but that is my opinion.
Thanks Dave and everyone else who helped out. I had a feeling after the first week that the Ray was a dud. It didn't act like a fish that was stressed or uncomfortable in a new tank. It sucks for that Ray to be put through a system like that only to end up dead.
The seller has fed me bull **** saying she was eating really well and he never had any problems with any of the other rays he sold. Just mine.
Well I might have mentioned I wasn't expecting a 9 inch Ray as I originally ordered a 5 to 6 inch Ray. Just before the seller shipped the Ray he tells me he made a mistake sexing and he had to send a larger female instead???? Which he gave it to me at the same price as the small size Ray. 40 bucks off.
The Ray came in skinny with some infection on her pectoral fins.

I understand that there is a risk with Wilds but the seller being a reputable vendor I thought the risk was very low. I should have asked for a video. Mind you my buddy wanted to buy a pair of Hens from the seller but only if he provided a video of them eating. Seller did not even reply to a 2k sale??? I know also was informed that
I'm not the only one that bought rays from this guy that died.
So beware when buying from SPENCER JACK in Winnipeg. My whole experience has been really shady with him. His business name is Afishcionados. If any one has bought a Ray from him I would like to know your experience also.

Hey don't try to bash I know how much it hurts and sucks but he has enough experience he know what to do (or should). Should have helped you out and told you to treat it or cover the tank or add substrate or anything to help your ray. Sometimes the best thing is to loose the ray you love to learn and never ever do it again. Half glass full man learn from it.... think hard you have learned from this ray

The issue with that is Spencer is a reputable vendor. You are fighting an uphill battle. You don't have much to back up your position unfortunately as much as I agree you are right. Careful outing someone with a strong business like this man because there will be way more people with good experiences. Not saying let it go, just saying tread carefully.

Like I say learn from this not saying it's your fault just alot of in experience that come with rays. it happens man learn from it and learn all the stuff that was done wrong or can be done better on your part because that's all that matters to be successfully

I don't think Mike did anything wrong. Personally I think he did all he could, I personally think this ray should have never been sold. I think more care should have been taken into making her ready to be transfered into a new home. I 100% agree there was a lot if learning here, but when I went through this my ray was fine for a little while before stuff went downhill and it arrived in perfect condition. This ray was pawned off last minute to get rid of it, that is my personal opinion whether it is the truth or not.

Not bashing just telling my experience. He can come on here and explain if he likes.
I had various different avid Ray keepers coach me along. This is a ray yes but I am very knowlegable with Aquarium husbandry and one of my strengths in the hobby. The Ray didn't move for 1 week and was skin and bones with an infection/wounds right of the hop. Maybe I'm wrong and he was just being a nice guy and gave me a great deal on a larger Ray for the price of the smaller Ray.
Was a great experience in the end of it all. Happy my marble is great and healthy.
Spencer will never see another dime from me or some other fellow Hobbyist that I know.

The problem with wild rays is that they can require a lot of acclimatization/deworming before they are ready for resale. Assuming you let the vendor know about the problems with this ray right from the start, you might ask him for a 50%-75% credit on a replacement, with you paying the domestic shipping. You seem to be a pretty experienced fish keeper so the vendor should be open to compromise of some sort in my opinion.

Thanks, I contacted him 5 days later and sent a photo. This is the photo of her 5 days later. I explained my thoughts. 2 weeks later again and told him exactly how she was. He told me to raise temp to mid 90s so I raised it to 90.

He new from the start. I think he is a Dik and its unfortunate that he wouldn't even meet me half way on this.
