Eagerly awaiting shipment of rays!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yeah, everything I've read suggests that any smooth substrate is OK for keeping rays. Coarse gravel with sharp edges and silica sand, that seems smooth but is actually abrasive, are bad for the sensitive disks of rays.

Nick said that they're only 5-6" disks right now. I figured with them being that small that I would be a little cautious with the substrate.

150 lbs is alot of sand, I would use half of that.

im thinking less than half ........you only want a about a inch if sand

they don't come from sand bottom but a silt bottom.

The guy who told you this (ECZS) has no idea what he's talking about. I have seen hundreds of pictures or rays in the amazon along the beaches in sand. There is both sand and silt in the amazon they can cope with both.

agree they can also live on river rocks as well

That would be cool subtrate...

part sand, part river rock. I think that would be quite a bit of work as well.

Well, I just changed out the substrate last night. What a PITA!! The tank has settled nicely. All I have left to do is make the heater guards tonight. Motoros coming tomorrow!
I'll post a thread with pics on the substrate change.
