so i gave my babes a earth worm last night which they LOVE. i clean them and usually cut them up into ~2in pieces usually leaving it kinda connected so they can rip it apart (i know i'm sick:D)... well my lap got one piece then my sen grabbed the remaining 6" section and proceeded to swim around the tank inhaling the whole thing which took about 10min, the best was that my other two chased him trying to get a piece but every time they got close she'd take off. it was hilarious. pic below

anyway i was just wondering how good are earth worms for them, like only for treats or maybe every couple of days. i just gives them so much joy i'd like to feed them more but i don't wanna ruin their diet, right now its bloodworms, krill, fw shrimp, beefheart, carnivore sinking pellets, and feeders every couple months for my entertainment (yeah i know)

any thoughts?

earthworms are really really good for them. Meaty food high in protein, that's exactly what type of foods they should be getting. ;)

Earthworm is a good source of food for them. I used to feed my piranha earthworms from the bait shop so I could blood explosion. I've never seen earthworms so big. They were like 6-8 inches long. I find earth worms really nasty looking if I have touch it. I used a tweezer to grab it. I don't see any advantages in feeding earthworms vs shrimps. My polys grow just as fast on shrimps and pellets.

Even if you don't plan on breeding earthworms you can buy them in bulk from worm farms. You just need a rubbermaid tub, powdered limestone, and peat moss. They will breed as you are using them and if you feed on a schedule you can have worms forever.

earthworms are a wonderful food source full of protein and almost every fish will accept them (even my stupid nandus nandus that won't touch anything dead even after a couple months of starving)

ive thought about trying it before, but now i'm convinced. thanks.

Another great part of feeding earthworms (aside from their source of protein, and watching your bichirs death roll them), they are so easy to clean up when you're done. They don't dissolve into nasty gucky powder on the bottom of your tank like an uneaten pellet, or fall apart into chunks that are hard to get out. Sometimes fullsize worms can even survive underwater for a good long time (considering they are drowning) and when it IS time to get them out, just grab em :) No mess clean up! Gotta love it!
