Ok, this just seems silly, but maybe others can make some sense of it. I've going to this local LFS and they have never, and I mean never ever, regularly carried eartheaters before. They could special order them for you if you wanted, but as part of the regular stocking it was considered rare to see them in. Over the last 2 months I've seen them bring in a few different variants of geos and now they've setup a 120 or so as a geo tank with some nice sized botia-kubotai. I've seen a bunch of posts on several forums showing huge peaked interest in eartheaters in general.

Has anyone else noticed this or am I nutso?

They go in and out of fashion.

People generally pick up a bunch of them to breed over here, even if they don't have a passion for them, and when they realise there's a very limited and specialised market and that they can't (shouldn't - doesn't stop most people :() be kept with most of the more popular aggressive Americans they end up getting out of them.

im just getting into the eartheaters. neat to watch but not much personality imo

maybe but not compared to ca cichlids imo

Personal taste, me ...I'd put Satanoperca, Retroculus, Hoplarchus and many other SA species up there for the winner. To each their own, but Eartheaters give one a little more leniency when putting together a "community" tank, than their CA cousins.

The only cichlids that Im keeping at the moment is a foursome of Tapajos orangeheads and I think that they are great. true you cant really keep them with other SA/CA cichlids as they are really mellow and timid. I keep mine with a school of redeye tetras (10+) and a shoal of black neons (20+). A true SA community tank...

Hi... I think that in the lfs they are small and have a very bland look so most folks pass them by if they don't know what they are.... so most lfs don't stock them.. Kinda like keyholes... until you've seen an adult you don't know what you are missing.. Now that folks on forums are starting to post pics etc interest has grown.. They go in to the lfs and ask for them... so shopowners are more likely to try stocking some..
As to personality... well what can I say.. I love them.. it's a growing addiction:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:.. But to really see their personalities you need to experience their interaction with their own kind.. keep at least 4-6 of a species on a sand substrate and just sit back and watch.. They are as full of personality as any fish I've ever kept and I've had lots of them over the years.. africans, SA, CA etc.. I currently have my orangeheads with angels and am lovin the tank almost as much as when I had my discus tank setup.. I even removed the school of tetras I had in there cause it took away from the geos :ROFL:
Anyways.. an lfs is gonna stock whatever gets requested often enough to create a demand.. Now there's more knowledge/awareness so more demand.. I'm sure in a while something else will become the new "gotta have".. but that's ok cause that means more for me HAHA.. Sue:D

You can keep them with a large number of SA/CA cichlids. I don't understand were the thought that they have to have an only geo tank or completely peaceful tank comes from. Some of them are even aggressive enough to keep with GT's and texas (brasilinesis goup). I've kept them with chocolates, Uaru's, severums, oscars, psittacus, angelfish, robertsoni, flagtails, discus, and several more. Plus you see tons of tanks with Dats, bichirs, arowana's, peacock bass, and all kinds of other fish with healthy looking geo's.

A lot of Geo's are now tank bread and very hardy to most tap water. No, you can't keep them with red devils and dovii. But you can't keep anything with most of the highly aggressive large CA fish.

Their interest come and go, just like any other material item.

No matter the trend, I will always have atleast one tank stocked with Eartheaters:)
