I've been without any cichlids for a few months and i'm starting to jones for one, especially since I got my 75 gallon. Eartheaters specifically have caught my interest recently.

I was wondering if anyone could recommend some specific species that would be suitable for a 75 gallon oddball community tank. I understand most are generally peaceful fish, but are there any that remain smaller (perhaps around 6") when grown? Tankmates would be other non aggressive fish such as bichir, ropefish, butterflyfish, and peacock eel.

Thanks in advance.

Geophagus steindachneri
Geophagus sp. 'Rio Pindare'
Geophagus sp. 'Orange Head Tapajos'
Geophagus sp. 'Araguaia Orange Heads'

All 6-7" species. There's plenty more still I'm sure, but they'd be your most common.

Other fish you could look into from the Eartheater family are Gymnogeophagus sp, Biotodoma sp. and Guinacara sp. I would also recommend a number around 3 with 1m 2f as Cichlaholics Anonymous has stated.

Thanks guys, i'll look into those species. Didn't realize they preferred to be in groups.

so what are you guys calling earth eaters? just fish that move gravel i see eels and bichir. i like Fire mouths and Gymnos........looking for a turqousie cichlid

gymnos require cool waters
i've had mine in unheated tanks that sometimes went into the 60s...

eartheaters are a pretty wide ranging family that consist of geophagus, satanoperca, guinacara, gymnogeophagus, biotodoma and maybe others i missed out...
