Hoax
The California Earthquake Prediction is a Hoax According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS)
There was a story that started circulating after a website called
Quake Prediction stated that Los Angeles is at a very high risk for an earthquake to strike sometime between April 13 and 17 , but most likely on April 13, and that the earthquake would be between 5.0 to 6.5 magnitude.
However, staff at the USGS and CalTech University say that this prediction is not true and that they are not affiliated with it in any way.
“It’s all a hoax, really,” said Linda Curtis with CalTech and U.S.G.S. “We’re not predicting or saying that any earthquake is coming within the next 24 hours.”

The story spread quickly on sites such as Twitter and Facebook and many phoned the USGS office to ask about the risk and what they should do.
Erik Pounders of the USGS wanted to stress however that it is very difficult to predict an earthquake and that no one has been able to consistently predict any earthquake anywhere.
“You can either predict it right, predict it wrong or not predict it at all,” he said.

Mr. Pounders said that the website,
Quake Prediction, has no credentials and there is no validity to any statement they are making.
There was also a chain e-mail going around that stated:
"My buddy's wife works at the seismology dept. in L.A. and they called everyone in today and said get your kids out of school and stock up on water because there is going to be a major quake within 24 hours,"
However, the USGS wants to stress that no one should panic and that they have predicted no earthquake at all.
