An magnitude-4.3 earthquake struck Illinois early today about 48 miles west northwest of Chicago, the U.S. Geological Survey
reports.
There were no immediate reports of injury or damage from the quake, which hit around 5 a.m. ET.
Update at 7:58 a.m. ET: CNN says one resident of Belvidere, Ill., about 70 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, reported a foot-long crack in his kitchen wall from the quake.
Update at 8:25 a.m. ET: The
Chicago Sun-Times reports that the quake hit around the towns of Sycamore and Virgil, rattling residents out of bed.
It quotes Winnebago County Sheriff Sgt. Aaron Booker as saying he thought the quake was thunder and "felt the whole building shake."
"It lasted 10-15 seconds," Booker tells the newspaper. "It was a pretty good shake."
