Have you guys ever thought about what would happen to your fish tank after an earthquake? Just the thought about a decent sized earthquake toppling my fish tank or causing it to self destruct makes me shudder. Is there anything that we can do to prevent or mitigate the damage of said nightmare?

heres a start, move away from California. lol just kidding i know its awesome out there. but we didnt have earthquakes out here untill just recently. but thats bad because i live right by one of the biggest fault lines in the world. so they say its pre tremors to make the one from Haiti look like child's play. but it is a scary thought but i dont think there is much to do to protect the tanks.

Insurance

I don't know, never thought about it but I would assume it could cause a lot of damage.

It acctually ensures that the tank is 100% level (water levels out naturally if the ground is cushy)

Water levels out, but the tank doesn't. The tank being unleveled will only cause it to sink more on the lower end.

Insurance

On the assumption that the pavement weight capacity have been respected ( which, as we all know, is rarely the case with our monster tanks )

Hi,yes using a layer of foam placed between the tank and its stand will help, we had an earthquake here in Italy about a year and a half ago it was about 6 on the rict. scale,my tank had no problems!

Insurance is they only way really. Depending on the type of earthquake your experiencing, rolling or jarring, your tanks may survive or not. If you have a tank with a wider footprint as oppose to a taller show tank profile it might not topple over. I was standing about 10 feet away from a 10k gal salt water tank during one of the Northridge earthquake after shocks and saw the tank jump about a good 8" up and then settle back down(it had a metal stand) without any major damage. Now even if your aquarium survives the earthquake depending on how you have your tanked plumbed, the bulkhead or pvc could shear off the tank resulting in a major puddle of water. Just remember, that insurance will not cover the livestock you have in the tank.
