Earthworms for feeding

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
From my experience, you'd be hard pressed to find a fish that didn't like to snack on a nice plump worm.

From my research, it's one of the most nutritious things you can feed your fish. Also, from what I've been able to dig up on diseases/parasites - fish aren't susceptible to anything that a worms are generally known to potentially carry.

That explains why I've never had any problems from feeding worms! I'd still be careful of fertilizers though! All my fish get worms daily! From 1" piranha babies to my 13" oscar pair.fish love the wiggle! N must taste good too!

Look into culturing red wigglers... basically just a rubbermaid with air holes, some shredded newspaper...some leaves...some veggie scraps...and a few dozen worms to get started... Whenever we have some leftover salad, wilted lettuce, etc from the kitchen...they go into the bin (which is in the basement)... I can harvest as many worms as I could ever use... give bunches to friends... and never buy them again...

I feed nightcrawlers from my LFS. They only cost $2.50 a dozen. The advantages of getting them from a store is that they always have a year-round supply. That allows me to buy them in the winter. Plus, I know that they're clean.

Thanks for all the tips! Glad to know that there's so many routes to go on this one, haha.

I do already vermicompost (aka, I've got 3 big bins of them that I use to compost my food waste) so I can readily gather them. Great tips though, thanks all!

Nightcrawlers or regular garden worms are extremely nutritional for fish. Dig them up, and put them in a damp paper towel so the paper leeches the mucous from their bodies and the expel all dirt and waste. Then, plop 'em in there.
