If your mom is going to take are of the tank.. while your gone... why don't you ask her what she wants? instead of what you want, that your mom is going to be responsible for? or just take the tank down altogether until you can be responsible/time/space/ect for your own tank?

go with the tetras or cories, the goldfish get too big to live comfortably in a 29 if well taken care of. Goldfish also are pretty dirty fish(heavy bioload).

Except I would mix both cories and tetras. They would get along fine. Cories tend to stick to bottom and midwater, and are peaceful.

Most tetras stick to midwater to upper.

Adding an angel fish would also be ok.

To keep the stocking in check, I would just do the algae cleanup myself. You don't need an algae eater or pleco for a tank that small. You could do the work once a week in less than 10min.

A small school of barbs and skunk loaches will provide you with a fierce tank.

I'd go for the tetras. Goldies are messy, and IME cories die very easily.

I was going to suggest just taking the tank down for a while if your mom doesn't want to take care of it.

ok ive got it. a line of fake plants bordering the back wall with a piece of fake driftwood in the front and maybe a few small ornaments like flat rocks stacked on a wall. fish: school of neon tetra's, 1 baby green sunfish, and a small pleco or a few small algae eaters (otocinclus's). what do you think?

If you do just the sunfish, he'll be more than enough to make that tank awesome! Once he gets bigger, you can upgrade him, but as a baby and a growout, your mom will probably fall in love with him. Get rid of the heater and feed lightly, and normal weekly maintenance will be plenty.

You won't need any catfish or other bottom fish with the green. They are constantly picking around for food.
