easy and cheap meal worm breeding for your fish(with picz)

im going to make this so easy as i could.

the bigger the better but one this size will work.

you will need whole grain (works best if blend)
when done blending put enough to cover the bottom on all 3 slides
buy from your lfs .i bought $1,50 and got 100 meal worms. inspected them if there some dead or skin take it out and place the m/w in the first slide.
best food to feed them carrots and lettuce.also some apples are good and will turn to
faster.now remove the [FONT=Arial, Tahoma, Verdana] pupae and place them in the 2nd slide.and wait in a week and couple of days they will turn in to beetles.

if some come out with b/d its better if there put in the grass and let them go (they will not breed as fast or healthy)
now remove the beetles and place in 3rd slide.
they will breed in a couple of weeks.in 3 weeks remove the grain and put it in a container with holes or no top.After removing wait a week and place lettuce and remove it when it starts going bad.you will not be able to see them there so so small.you must remove because the beetles will eat the eggs.

tips;
1.MUST REMOVE THE FOOD BECAUSE IT WILL SMELL OR MAKE MITES(IF YOU GET MITES YOUR HOLE COLONY WILL BE TRASH)

2.dont buy mega meal worms or supper worms
why?they will turn to pupae and then beetles but WILL NOT BREED.

3.the warmer the faster they will breed(if cold they will take twice the time)

and the best tip is:
before you feed them to your fish or any pet feed them first.


***the bad part about feeding fish m/w is the flooding skin or skin on bottom(meal worm skin will not be fully digested ***

one quick tip if its could out side and and you could bring them inside do it ( the cold will make them breed slower)

Interesting and useful thread! Been looking all over for this one. Wish I can breed the superworms, though, as my monsters (20" giant grourami and 26" silver arowana) will ignore the smaller mealworms. I will still try the smaller ones for the tinfoil barbs. I have been storing the superworms aside and grow them to adults. My Oscars and the arowana love the beetles. Are the adults sterile? Do you happen to know what hormone are they pumped to become superworms? No, I will not get any. I just want to know if they can affect my fish in any way. I also learned today that they love lettuce? I have been trying a few vegetables to "pump" my mealworms to no avail. Still thank you very much for this thread!

No I just know they get pump with hormones n no they will not affect your fish.
They do love lettuce LOL.
You could make superworms become Beatles n feed them to your fish

I'm a bit confused, so tell me if this is right:

1. Prepare 3 containers. Put a large amount of whole grain oats into the first container, along with the worms and some food (lettuce, carrots).

2. When they form a cocoon, move them into container #2, which is empty.

3. When they hatch into beetles, move them into container #3.
A. I *think* you mean to put the beetles into a bed of whole wheat oats, like the first container.
B. I assume that I need to keep feeding them lettuce and carrots.

4. After the beetles have been together for 21 days, remove the beetles from container #3, so they can't eat the eggs (which we can't see). Put lettuce and carrots in place for the babies to eat, replacing as it rots.
