yeah it looks cool but confuses the hell out of me. im such a noob to this fish keeping thing that i dont even know why i have bothered buying a tank. im sure its not real hard but @ the same time, ima NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOB

drdrewr,

How much purigen are you running and how often do you re-generate it?
Where did you get those reactors? Are you just using your canisters to drive them?

Thanks!

If you don't vac the gravel in a ugf tank on a regular basis you'll have high nitrates.
30-40% waterchanges every other week is not nearly enough to keep nitrates down on a well stocked tank.never mind overstocked.
Canisters can be nitrate factories if they aren't cleaned on a regular basis.

Not trying to slam you.It seems you are doing alot of work and spending alot of cash on a problem that would easily be handled by some basic maintenance.;)

I running a total of 4 liters of Purigen. Haven't regenerated it yet. I only went into service last month. Search on "nextreef" for links to the reactors.

gomez,
I hear you. I just got done taking all of the gravel "out" of my 265 gallon tank. No matter how hard I tried, I was not able to keep it clean enough.

"EVERY" filter is a nitrate factory if they aren't cleaned out on a regular basis. In my setup, filters are for "biological" filtration. Water changes are for nitrates. Purigen is not meant to substitute for maintenance, but, it does get rid of the nitrates.

Nothing will take the place of maintenance, but, it is no longer a heroic effort required for me to maintain my aquaria. The tank with the UGF registers less that 5ppm nitrates. Purigen (running fluidized) is what did this for me.

Good to hear you do regular water changes! To reduce your nitrAtes, do more water changes. Purigen sounds great, but do we know what else they are removing from the water? I guess I just don't trust the stuff. But I'm glad it's working for you! :)

Those canisters do look neat, I must say. But my 125g is filtered only by two HOB's and a Magnum HOT and all is well.
