Just looking for some input on what would be an easy feeder fish to keep and breed easily for the purpose of feeding my aro quality feeders not that lfs crap. Thanks for any suggestions!

Fancy tailed guppies . Seriously guppies I actually breed guppies always have too many and end up giving them away to friends as feeders. I started breeding them about 5 years ago for my aro's but since i moved to South Carolina I dont have monster fish anymore . But guppies feed them guppies :).

Guppies are good. They are really easy to breed, and a good food, as stated above.

convict cichlids. if not available then jewel cichlid. Which i am using. Spawn almost every month. Read up on the other threads lot of info on how to get going there.

here's a pic of one of the jewel pairs with the tiny frys.

Setup is easy similar to convicts. Pick the best looking 6 jewel cichlid from the shop. put in a well filtered tank. Plenty of hiding places. A few small pots on the side for them to choose from and that would be what you get very soon. My 1st pair spawned after 2 weeks and after that it regularly twice every 3 months.

BTW i do keep guppies but the size is ok for the arowanas sized from 5" to about 10 " After that they will need bigger game such as the convicts fish.

i can understand if your aro is a small guy like under 5" mark, but is it really worth trying to breed fish to feed your aro? ive consider this in the past, but it gets to the point where it would be pretty pointless since fry are so small and it would take a while to raise them to a decent size for your aro to even consider a decent snack.

just get him off feeders or go to a LFS you trust with quality feeders

like sQwiReL said
its not worth it to breed for food.
it will not keep up with your aros hunger
babies need time to grow to a nice feeder size.
and a bunch of half raised fish will do how many feedings?not many.
and i dont think most fish breed year round.
i did jewels and i know it wouldnt keep up.
i had 3 batches, didnt use as feeders tho,but would be gone in no time.
not sure laws and what ga has but check out my diy thread, look for bait bags for umbrella net.
if theres minnows by you,get that net and enjoy the free feeders.
:)

But if you are going to use live feeders, it is "A" OK to breed fish for your aro. They are snacks and treats not meals or staples. Adds to the fun of the hobby and if you have the space, it does not hurt a thing. You could get a few 20 longs get a pair of red jewels, and a pair of reg cons, and a pair of pink cons. Get a 55 and stuff it with guppies. This should give you a bunch of treats for your aro.

for the purpose of feeding my aro
not snacks :grinno:

and
20's
55's
then need grow out tanks
power
food
time
yada yada
then kill what you just spent all that time to raise
is it really worth it?
naa
;)
