im trying to learn how the sump works and how you keep from over flowing or draining the tank.
With a overflow-system, no more water is coming down to the sump than is beeing pumped up to the aquarium. So if the pump stops nothing happens

what is a good ratio of tank:sump to shoot for?

sorry to cut in line, but to use a sump, do you have to have holes in the bottom or sides of your tank? Or is there another way to get water to go to the sump?

You can make a cheap and easy overflow.

1 to 10 or 2 to 10 - always the bigger the better.

A 20 gallon sump should be very good to a 100 gallon tank, if it's well filled with
bioballs or lavarock.

Just remember to suspend the bio ball chamber above the water line as best you can - they work much better when they are exposed to air with water trickling over them.
Or you can use an airpump with a diffusor in the sump. The bacteria do a lot better with air.

I never heard of a sump that was too big!!! So if ur planning on making one make it as large as possible...remember the larger ur sump the greater is ur total final volume...that means u can keep more FISH!!!

I'm interested in a sump filter, my tanks keep getting bigger and the wife wants a 240g this summer, but what I can't get straight in my head is that our cannister filters pull the "dirty" water from about 1/2 way down the tank but a sump filter skims the top. Why not from the middle?

You can make them pull from mid way or lower, its just depends how you set-up the overflow. I'm just setting up tank currently where it has 2 overflows and I'm plannign on having one pull from low in teh tank and one from the surface.

Most skim from the surface because thats where you get a build up of biological waste. If you remove any surface agitiation from your tank with canisters on it, you'll notice a biological 'oil slick' forming on the surface of your water.
