Easy to find Acrylic Bonding Agents

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
hybrid, you dont see my point lol
most of my stuff is just tweaking already been done diy projects or filters
im not trying to re make an acrylic glue they already have out
if there was a better glue, they would already have it on the shelf lol

Since it will be covered by a air tight and water tight substance thats has been used for decades (silicone) on aquariums. It will be ok.
i dont think silicone will stick to anything listed in this thread for very long lol

Seems like alot of wasted time to avoid using the industry standard for bonding acrylics. Check out RidOut Plastics or their site rplastics.com to get yourself Weld-On acrylic bonding agents. They produce different viscosities for different applications and/or cure times.

I found RidOut, but like I said I don't want order anything... I already had all of those things laying around. I'm only going to use this to build an overflow box, so I don't want to order a big container and not use it all, or order a small container and not have enough.

Anyways just tested the PVC primer and Super Glue test pieces again. placed them with the joint on the edge of the table. Whacked the edge that was vertical with a hammer repeatedly.

In both instances, it took 3 solid whacks, and the acrylic pieces cracked instead of the joint splitting.

I'd say PVC primer is definitely worth using, especially considering its only $2.50 for a can of it down at my local ace hardware, and its $6.50 PLUS shipping for a can of Weld-on #3 at RidOut. Not only more convenient but cheaper too.

Plus you can be sure that PVC primer is safe once dry because we use it for our drinking water.

MEK is by far the best way to 'weld' acrylic together. A coworker of mine (at a glue company of all places) bonded some acrylic together to make a reptile habitat for his Kenyan Sand Boas - seamless, invisible, water tight, and strong. Makes the acrylic look like it was made for a fish tank haha.

Yep its mostly MEK and Tetrahydrofuran in PVC primer. They have clear stuff at ace and menards.

I'm just using it for an overflow box... like i said in my first post PVC primer is basically the same chemical makeup as the plastic solvent-cement sold by us plastics. I have full confidence in it.

Keep us posted on the thread - I'm not familiar with how well silicone adhere's to plastic and remains, every time I've tried to use it, it just peels off like a peice of gum after any solid time submerged.
