I had a fx5 on my 75g and it was a pain. Bumped to a 180g, sold the fx5 and bought 3 ac110s. They hold more bio than the fx5, easier to clean, more water movement, better surface agitation. The noise is much louder though. Not horrible but I wouldn't want it in my bedroom. I used to have my 75g in my bedroom and you couldn't hear it ever.

I had a Fluval 405, and while it hid all pipes etc; I used to hate having to clean it, unavoidable water splashing out when you disconnect the pipes etc.

HOB, internal or sponge (or combo) will do the job, unless you are drastically overstocked or lax on cleaning imo

I hate disconnecting the fluval canisters. Always a struggle.

I think it all boils down to media. My FX6 is mostly loaded with ceramic media and just two round coarse pads. I basically blast the pads out, swish the ceramic media bags in some tank water and give the sponges a good squeeze. I suppose if you were using floss or something it would be more work. But when I'm done there isn't any detritus left in there.

I hate hob filters, other than the aquaclears, I feel like cartridges are a rip off.

i dislike cartridges, which is why i use the aquael versamax, it has two containers which are pretty good if you have one for ceramic, and the other for sponge

also yeah, i bought two fluval canisters last year 206 and 406, and hated both. Messy, clumsy; and the closed system is probably the worst system compared to a sump or relatively open HOB, that benefits from open air.

Marineland sells refillable media baskets for Penquein and Emperor line HOBs. You can use them to clamp DIY filter pads. I bought polyester batting by the yard from craft shop and cut to fit. It's even cheaper than AC foam in the long run so it's not worth to recycle them.
