Yesterday I added 6 bamboo stalks that have already developed(have roots and are pretty tall) to my tank, and overnight the nitrates have dropped significantly, not sure on exact numbers but I tested just now and they are at 10, and it's been a week since my last water change, usually it's about 80 at this time.

What I did to attach the stalks is simply zip tie them to random intakes and returns/spray bar. Super easy to care for, doesn't need co2 or anything extra, but actually thrive just from the nitrates and phosphates. Of course you still need water changes, but your fish will be happier with constantly low nitrates, instead of 60+ by the time the tank needs a water change. I'll get a pic of my setup soon.

What type of light is needed for those? The light in the room is enough for them? I've got a mangrove on my marine tank, but haven't tried it for fresh... The mangrove needs the light from my MH.

Yeah the light in the room is enough, I had one stalk in there for a month or two and it had no roots, and has sprouted a ton and the leaves are super green, so I assume it's doing great. I didn't notice a difference in nitrates till I added the 5 more.

Are those real bamboo stalks or are they "lucky" bamboo?

Uhh, I think real bamboo, we've had them for years in a vase by the window, but the root ball grew so impacted that rocks started to fuse with the roots, so we lessened the root ball's size and stuck it in a bigger vase, but the leaves started turning yellow so I put them all in my tank, and so far so good. Is there a difference with this lucky bamboo? Ive seen it in pet stores before.

From what I understand "lucky" bamboo isn't a real bamboo plant, it just looks like it. Although it's a hardy plant it is very slow growing so it doesn't use up as many nitrates as other plants will.

i wish i could setup my tank like that but i'd have fish committing suicide all day.
