I overturned a 55 outside and hosed it all out. Worse idea ever.

Why what happen? I'm about to do that this weekend with a stank 40B thats been sitting with about 6" of water and 4-5" of sand.

i tried the cup idea, the net seems to messy. what i have learned to do is use a dust pan. you can scoop up alot more on the dust pan and let the water drain off the dust pan so there isnt a lot of water on the floor. plus with the flat bottom of the dust pan makes it very efficient in getting the sand off the bottom (instead of a cup)

^^ Great idea! I'll just have to clean our dust pan pretty good...and I think it has a rubber lip which might have to come off...still though, great idea.

i would leave the rubber lip on, it helps getting the most sand off the bottom. im glad this helps alot. i went through trial and error and this is the easiest and cleanest way. ive changed alot of sand in my day:nilly:

So I'm starting to clean the colorquartz and it doesn't seem to be behaving the same as the play sand.

For the play sand I just dumped some in a big 10gal bucket/pale I have, took a showerhead (the kind on a handle/hose) and used a combination of that jet with me sifting through the sand, churning it over & over and then pouring the bucket out to get the grime off the top.

This stuff seems to be floating a BUNCH of actual sand to the top rather than just grime and it doesn't seem to settle very quickly....

I also think my color choice may have been bad....kind of looks like, well, crap. Literally :\

Three years later the white sand is still out there in the front yard. It looks pretty nasty

Well...success. I used the dust pan to get most, siphon to get the rest. Rinsed the colorquartz & added the new sand. There's a more detailed thread here if you're more interested than that.
