Hello my brothers and Sisters, I,m having a problem with nitrate goin up in my tank . Will this stuff help it say,s that it has nitraban to reduce nitrate in the water and reduce water changes? What do you Monsters think? Help:nilly::confused::cry:

From what i understand the bacteria that convert nitrates to nitrogen (nitrites actually happens between the two) need slow moving water that is low in oxygen.

My thought is that if you don't have a place like this in your filter (some sort of denitrafiying filter) then the bacteria you are adding will not multiply.

Depending on the size of your tank and preferances there are many ways to counter high nitrates.
Denitrator filter (DIY coil or store bought)
Plants in the tank or in a sump
More water changes; 24/7 drip water changer.

Chemicals are only a temporary fix for issues with water parameters and generally should only be used as a last resort. The best way to remove nitrates is to just do more/larger water changes.

I think you should give it a try and let us know how it works. Personally i wouldn't use it on a regular basis even if it works, but it may be good to use before going on a vacation or other times when regular weekly waterchanges are not possible.

One of these days I'll get around to testing this stuff myself, just have to set up another tank to do it. You may want to look into using the Instant Ocean version of this product as it is more concentrated. Tetra and Instant Ocean are sister companies, along with Marineland.

The OP is trying to fix a nitrate problem, not trying to do a science expirement. IMO, it isn't worth putting his/her fish at risk just to test out a product that may just make the problem worse.

Really? And you don't know that this stuff works or not. You gave your opinion I gave mine, do you really want to trash this thread? If you don't have any other info to add then why post?

If the OP is will ing to give this a try, then why does it matter to you?

First you should test your tap water for nitrates.

Excessive waste build up, dirty filters, over stocking, and over feeding will cause high nitrates.
I suggest a through gravel vaccing and cleaning of your mechanical filtration and or clogged media along with 50-75% water change.

Also feeding less.
Over feeding will cause more waste, more ammonia, more nitrites to be converted to nitrates.

Big fish, heavy feeding, in small tank = the need for more frequent water changes.
