yeah check for parasites

yeah giant danios would be a better option than feeder fish, and its not an over reaction, yes other new fish can carry parasites as well but feeder goldfish are much more prone to having them since they are sold for much less of a profit they are kept in much more cramped and dirty conditions

and OP if there is a petsmart by you, they are having sales on several different tetras right now where they are only a dollar a piece (i think the giant danios are also part of this sale)

I think you are over reacting here. the gold fish is not being fed - not being eaten. Any fish can bring in parasite not just gold fish. I guess you can be extra careful and buy a few more non-feeder fish to train your fish. this will cost you significantly more... easier to flush gold fish down the toilets that fish you spent much $$ for.

The reason she said goldfish are a bad idea is because goldfish are known to carry parasites. Yes as you stated it is possible for any fish to carry parasites but introducing a goldfish will highly increases your chances of parasites.

Also goldfish will max out the bio load on that tank. Goldfish are almost as messy as oscars and it is only a 55 gallon tank. 1 RD and a couple of goldfish and you are looking at daily water changes to get the waste out and keep the nitrates down.

How big is your RD?

In the long run you will not be able to keep the RD in a 55 gallon, they really need a 90.

I would suggest saving up for or finding a larger tank for cheap on craigslist. If your RD is still small enough get it a tank mate like a convict or a Female JD or another cichlid that doesn't grow any larger than 8". That way she will have someone to compete for food with. Once she gets bigger move both the fish into a 100+ gallon tank and you should have a pretty cool set up.

Like suggest before though I would make sure she doesn't have parasites.

Let's be practical on the new hobbyist here...
picky eater RD cost about ~4 bucks
gold fish cost ~30 cents

This person is trying to keep a 4 dollar fish alive.

Buying other tank mate fish would probably cost more than the RD itself. Then the sensible thing to do is try your luck that the fish will eventually eat. If the fish dies... spend another 4 bucks get another RD... and not have to worry about rehoming the fish later on. RDs are not known to be picky eaters like this particular fish. Buying a big tank for the new fish, etc. in the future can create more problem... money and space.

You guys make the gold fish sound like cursed poison... stay away from the GF by all means. LFS feed GFs all the time... and guess who buy from the LFS? Fish hobbyists!

I am just trying to make things easier for this new hobbyist - fish keeping should be enjoyable not to be ridden with troubles/stress... I could be wrong here but this is my opinion.

Figuratively, they are.;) I've kept goldfish and I know how prone exactly they are to issues, most particularly flukes. We have very good reasons not to encourage the use of goldfish in general as feeders.

Giving the wrong suggestions are what exactly cause troubles and stress.

Well said Lupin. ;)

And to the guy saying goldfish are okay: To me it sounds like you treat fish like items and not animals. You are saying that just because a fish is cheap it is worthless, they are not worthless. Who cares if the tank mate being added would be more expensive? IMO a fish up to about $30 is still a cheap fish for me, but I don't treat it like a $30 dollar bill, I treat it like a living creature, which is how all animals should be treated, no matter how little or how much they cost.

ding ding ding, just the other day i drove 20 miles with my test kit, water rinsed through one of my established filters, and a bucket to help a friend who was having problems with there tank for a GREEN SPOTTED PUFFER they got at wal-mart. its a living animal, try to save the one you have and not just let it die and get another one......... that is an assenine comment to make on a forum like this one, the whole point to the forum is to help each other learn how to keep the fish we have and want to have so that they dont die.
