A few reasons why roaches are better than crickets/locusts:

1. They don’t smell
2. They breed faster yet can't infest.
3. They don’t chirp.
4. If you leave them in the viv they wont nibble on your animal.
5. They don’t die off as easily.
7. They eat anything
8. If they do get out, they will die in a matter of days, or go out side because they'd rather burrow in rotten logs.
9. Their chitin rate is low, so you can be a bit over the size range and wont impact your animal as easily.
10. They are soft bodied and packed with protein

1. i never had a problem with crickets smelling
2. i dont care for breeding them
3. cricket chirping is relaxing (sometimes)
4. dont leave them in there then
5. dont buy so much that they die before there fed
7. they make good cricket food/supplements
8. my old apartments had cockroaches inside and outside
9. i dont know what that means but my animals have never had a problem with impaction from crickets.
10. you can feed/dust crickets to give em all that fancy stuff
11. cockroaches are GROSS

well... it's all down to preference really. I know a few people that breed lizards and so have to breed them large scale, and generally they favour the roach species. I am like you though in the sense that i dont mind chirping, and in fact quite like it.

I think there need to be a distinction between the feeder cockroaches and pest cockroaches.

Feeder cockroaches are usually from tropical places where they usually don't hiss, nor can they survive in most places of North America or Europe. Most of the ones used as feeders usually can't climb or fly either.

The kind that infest your place are not suitable to use as feeders. The ones that are found in your apartments are usually German Cockroaches, or the American Cockroaches. What we use as feeders are true death-heads, fake-death-heads, dubia, lobsters, hissing cockroaches and a couple others.

The pest cockroaches are completely unsuitable for herptile-keeping, so no need to worry about that.

If you are icked out by cockroaches and prefer crickets, then there is no harm in that.

Oh well done for pointing that out, i missed that, these aren't your common pest roaches, these are different, and are actually very interesting little bugs to watch in themselves- so don't confuse!!!

In college we bred South American Giant cockroaches to feed to some of the herps in the Biology department. The nice thing about breeding cockroaches vs. crickets is that crickets need to lay eggs in soil. Cockroaches are great because they hatch from an egg case and are ready go. I would love to breed roaches but like I said, I don't think my wife would be cool with it. But the only time I feed my lizards and fish crickets is when I can't catch live prey outdoors.
