:iagree: Mine was factory sealed and everything was/is in perfect order. Is running silently now in my bedroom on my 180.

(I only went with pettreatguy because of aclockworkorange's recommendation and I don't regret it one bit)

:nilly: Glad it worked out for you bud! They sure are quiet huh?

25,000 feedback at 99.9%... better than most.

I noticed that feedback rating, which is why I'm having second thoughts on dismissing the guy completely.99% not too shabby with that many ratings

I don't see one negative feedback on his page for an FX5 in the last 9 months... and he sells quite a few a week. Dunno, just wanted to share my good experience with him as a seller.

Oh, and it's 99.9%, that's one out of every thousand people leaving a negative feedback rating.

Ok, thanks everyone. I think I have enough information to atleast make an educated decision on this

I bought an FX5 body from a LFS for $50.

Look around and you will find great deals...

Damn, what store was that? The cheapest I've ever seen was a used FX5 for $100 a few days on the FS threads here.

I bought my FX5 on ebay from timholliday. It was $189+$29 shipping. I paid within a few hours and he mailed it the same day. Everything was great about it, but he shipped by UPS Ground and that took a long time to get to L.A.

Here's a link to an auction for $189: http://cgi.ebay.com/Hagen-Fluval-FX...239?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2eaf7fb69f

IMO, it's worth it to buy a new FX5 rather than a used one. Most of the time, there won't be too much of a difference between the prices of a used FX5 vs. a new FX5 from ebay. Most people here on MFK sell their used ones for about $200 and you can buy a brand new one with a 3 year warranty and uncut hoses for about $220. When you buy used, the seller will probably tell you it's only been used for a few months, but how do you know it wasn't running for 3 years already?. You might as well get a brand new one for an extra $20-$30. But if you can find a really good deal on an FX5 and it seems to be in good shape, just buy it. They're great filters and worth the money, especially at $200-225. Shoot, an XP3 at Petsmart costs about that much.

i want to clarify, the FX5 i bought from Petreatguy was packed beautifully, in an undamaged box when it arrived. i gave him positive feedback because i couldn't imagine that anything was wrong with it. All original packaging too, never been opened. i didn't find out that i had a problem until a few weeks later when i opened the box to set it up.

then i was put through the wringer by petreatguy, told that it was my fault. so i called Hagen all they asked for was a copy of the receipt showing that it was a new purchase and not a used filter. they shipped me the part that was broken at absolutely no charge to me, it just showed up a few days after i faxed them the receipt.

if you pay with paypal and you have a problem with the purchase and the seller refuses to fix it file a refund claim with paypal and get a refund which includes postage, i have had to do it a few times and got my money back and the seller refused the broken filter back so i got to keep that also. broken filters can come in handy for parts at times i keep a huge rubbermaid tote for such items.
