EBJD almost looks burnt

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I haven't used either medication. Don't forget that some meds can wipe out the beneficial bacteria in your filter. Did you move over a cycled filter to the hospital tank with the fish?
Well I grabbed another one of those sponge filters for another aerator I have, (haven't had to use the hospital tank in a bit) and I emptied some bio from one of my filter pads in the tank, gonna let that sponge suck that and a little gravel waste up from my large tank, and when I get home from work today I'm thinkin it should be good. I did that last time and all worked well

I just moved in with the girlfriend a month ago so I didn't wanna have 2 tanks running lol

IF this fish makes it through treatment I would start with:

1. A dipbath of methylene blue and salt in a 5 gallon bucket for 30 minutes. The instruction on the methylene blue bottles that ive seen are good for dipbaths in regards to dosing.

2. Paraguard the entire tank he's in. Do a round of paraguard full dose for a week at the very least.

this looks suspiciously like ammo burn to me...but if no other fish are showing signs then ammo burn that severe isn't super likely.

This is, if not the above mentioned, definitely fungal or bacterial in nature I'd wager.

I was thinking ammo burn as well though as you also said I can't imagine it effecting just one fish like that. Then again I have seen some weird stuff.

If it isn't ammo burn and I had to choose between bacterial and fungal I'd go fungal. Only because I had 5 EBJD adults and they all where prone to fungal infections. It never got bad but any stress would cause them to get small patches. You can see it below in the pic of one of my EBJD's near his caudal fin.

Ty guys for the info, as far as an update goes.... I've moved him to a 20g hospital tank and have so far used "kanoplex" and another copper based solution called "copper power green" or something like that. Someone at my LFS recommended copper dosages for the fungal infection. And as of last night he doesn't look as "burnt" and is starting to get most of his blue back. The fins haven't changed, he's still my little stumpy fella. But I'm gonna go pick up paraguard today and try that out next. And if that doesn't work I'm gonna go with your dip bath method. I thought ammo burn at first as well but I checked my water every 2 days for the past month or so and ammonia is at 0. Nitrates just a little high from my oscar slobs but I've been doing constant water changes in the main tank to subdue that.

Messed up part is, he was eating great and acting completely normal in his regular tank, now he hasn't touched food at all with this treatment in the hospital tank

Another quick question, could it actually be burns from salt? His body color not the fun structure... but I use a tbsp more of aquarium salt than recommended and my other fish thrive in that. Just wondering if maybe they're sensitive to salt?
