Has anyone had an issue where when the male and female are first introduced, they do the whole hitting each other with their tale thing, a little lip locking, and you think everything is going good, and the next day you male has had the crap beat out of him and is in the top of the tank cowering???

Yep, that male is not strong/dominant enough for that female. At least not this go around.

Rule of thumb is if you see them lock up a few times and nothing comes of it, take the male out.

it usually means its the same sex....

Both my Female JDs have locked lip before fighting over a male...

I know that cichlid lock lips when its the same sex.... male and female usually dont lock lips...

I always heard that that's something that the male and female do to test each others strengths when finding a potential mate

I had this same problem with JDs I kept them in the same tank with a divider until both fish were healed (they beat eachother good) then took the divider out and kept a eye on them and the male beat up the female again...divided them again tried again in a week and now I got 200 or soo week old fry.

Hmmmm.. i think testing of strength is male male or female female... to fight over territory....

but males do pick on the female, usually means he wants to mate.. but the female isn't ready...

u can tell which is a male and female with Jack Dempsey... with EBJDS.. its a bit hard.... but do try it.. see if they can spawn... '

btw.. how big is ur tank? not sure if u mention it already..

yeah it might be two males or two females. Only way i can sex my EBJDs is by their breeding tubes. My females always fight with eachother, but ive never seen pairs fight or liplock ever. I have three breeding pairs and they never lip lock.

waving tails against each other, then lip locking is confirming if its a breedable pair. Also something called sex.

in jack dempsey terms they do lock lips its a good thing but your lucky it wasnt the female cowering my male beat up my female
how big is your male to your female ( in cms)
and which is the ebjd ?
