I raised mine by himself until he was 4 inches, he is currently in with a severum and a few catfish.

They can be shy fish when with other fish.

Very nice

At about 3 inches mine went through a stage of not growing for a couple of months, no discernible reason in terms of stress, health, appetite, etc. So I started feeding them about 30% freeze dried mysis shrimp in their diet, which got them growing again. Just my experience.

I'm in favor of using UV for sensitive fish, have a good bit of experience with them. I'd call them optional, not a necessity, but if you do some research they have benefits beyond pathogen control, including a positive effect on fish immune system and redox (an element of water quality). The theoretical benefit to water quality is something I've seen in the real world. IME running UV makes your existing filtration more efficient. Put another way, with UV it takes less filtration to get excellent water quality. Not saying you should skimp on filtration, but with sensible filtration you can get the same water quality as some who way overfilter.

+1 even though I dont have one I plan on getting it. Lots of material on a google search. I remember doing a uv sterilizer review search and one of the sites actually listed which ones are b.s. and which ones actually do more than help with water quality I do remember reading allot of bad reviews on the green killing machine

I have one in my 75 that's also a high tech planted tank (link in my sig). He is basically the boss of the tank, and a solid 4-5" now. He used to be a little eh-ish but I have a UV sterilizer (Vecton 600...which I like because its supposed to be as good as the Emperor UV's but the replacement bulbs are like $5 instead of like $50) and he really perked up a lot more since then.

I strongly believe with more sensitive fish that UV is worth the time. I do though, have to change the bulb on mine and clean the quarts sleeve...which I'm a little nervous about but I have a friend that is more experienced with it than me who will help me out. Been running it for nearly 6 months now, its kinda time.
