EBJD eats massivore and it comes out of its gills?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are messy and clean eating cichlids. Oscar, JD and Green Terror are messy eater as they chew food in their throat and sift through the gills. Vieja and African peacocks are clean eater as they swallow food whole without chewing provided that the pellets are smaller than their mouth.

Every vieja I've had has been just as bad in occasion. Black belts I've owned especially so

Off topic a bit but what makes you think its female?

The guy I got it from said it was a female and apparently the guy he got "her" from had success breeding her. I'm not sure, I'm not interested in breeding her. I haven't vented it but the dorsal fin looks female to me. Not that I know anything about JDs, however.

My Oscar does this every meal. As others have said, it seems like he blows out more than he actually consumes lol. His mouth is like a cartoonish sized trap door though, so I don't think my pellets are too big for him. He's just a messy buffoon.

What size pellets you feed your black belts. I feed all my big and small cichlids, with Hikari mini and NLS 1 mm pellets. My Vieja sysn, bifas, melanuras and fenestratus will pick each pellet cleanly. MY GT will take a mouthfull of sand and pellets and sift out the unwanted through the gills. There is no gain to feed bigger pellets to big fish.

Try feeding Hikari Sinking Carnivore Pellets, they are smaller and should solve the problem. I also feed small pellets to avoid waste for this issue. I agree if it's blowing food out of it's gills the pellet is too large. NLS 2mm pellets are also a good choice. However if you have gravel they may get lost I have PFS substrate so as stated above they will pick them off the bottom. Either way go smaller. In a previous post someone mentioned breaking the Massivore into 3rds or quaters, this will help too.

Don't worry it is normal, soaking the pellets might help as they can just shallow it. I know I have smaller fish in with my bigger fish and they will grab pellets too big for them and make a mess trying to eat it, the "Dust" is them breaking up the pellet in their mouths, some cichlids will spit the pellets in and out of their mouth trying to break the pellet up.
