Anyone know the growth rate on these guys? Ive been thinking about changing the stock in my 38gal and getting one.

get a 4" one they r better. i know that they more prone to things when they r small.

About 1/3 of an inch a month for a while is normal if you feed it a lot.

not too slow i guess.

any objections to me putting it in my 38gal?

this could maybe work when it is little but it will definitely need a larger tank than that maybe a 55 if its gona be by itself

One in a 38 gallon aint that bad. I managed to have 5 in a 55 gallon and they did well. I bought them at around 1.5 inches in size and managed to bring them to 4-5 inchess before I sold them. No casualties because of a UV sterilizer. They need it especially when they're young because they're really vulnerable to parasites. Here's a picture of mine.

the key here is that you only kept them to 4-5in these would not have fit in there when full grown and you shouldnt think just what would be possible to house fish but what they would actually be comfortable and thrive in

...anyone else wanna give me their opinion?

and the ones in my lfs are like 3". is that a good size to buy them at?

They stop being 'prone to parasitic infection' when they reach sexual maturity... which happens around the 3" mark...

Growth rates depend on a lot of things. When they are fighting off parasitic infection they grow a lot slower ;-)

I wouldn't plan on keeping one long term ina 38 gal tank. I have one that is 9"... it would have been sad if he were stuck in a small tank under the assumption that he wouldn't grow so large. He is a beautiful fish...

I've seen some have growth spurts where they put on 1/2~3/4" per month... but those spurts only last a month or two...
