They stop being 'prone to parasitic infection' when they reach sexual maturity... which happens around the 3" mark...

Growth rates depend on a lot of things. When they are fighting off parasitic infection they grow a lot slower ;-)

I wouldn't plan on keeping one long term ina 38 gal tank. I have one that is 9"... it would have been sad if he were stuck in a small tank under the assumption that he wouldn't grow so large. He is a beautiful fish...

I've seen some have growth spurts where they put on 1/2~3/4" per month... but those spurts only last a month or two...

so i shouldnt get one?
i was under the impression that EBJDs stay smaller than regular JDs and only reach like 7" or so.

they still grow basically the same size they just do it alot slower than reg jacks

I do not agree that Blue Dempseys grow a lot slower than standard Dempseys... and I have grown out quite a few of each...

My fastest growing Blue Dempsey grew as fast and as large as my fastest growing standard Dempseys...

I think most people who grow out Blue Dempseys allow their fish to get parasites, then their fish doesn't grow very fast. This is not because "Blue Dempseys do not grow fast" it's because they are sick and spending their energy fighting parasites, not developing/growing...

You'll find hundreds of posts made by people who suggest Blue Dempseys are slow growers where these people do not share an ounce of personal experience...

You'll find a large number of threads where people share their perosnal experience and find their Blue Dempseys grow quite a bit faster than they suspected based on the common theories thrown around...

I don't mean to sound harsh toward anyone when I say this, but spreading "he said she said" type information is a disservice to everyone...

Edit/Add:

PS - I should add... my experience of Blue Dempseys growing close to the same rates as Standard Dempseys is in regards to Juvenals to adults... or from around 2"+

I do find that Blue Dempsey fry and babies grow slower than Standards...
