EBJD is its own species?

Yep, that's the article I was referring to, originally printed in TFH 20 years ago, and never disputed by the Luzardo family, where the author states: "It all started in 1985 when Mr. Luzardo received a mated pair of young Cichlasoma octofasciatum as a gift from a friend. "

EBJDs, in my opinion, are no different than the vast majority of fish in our hobby. Even those seemingly 'natural' farm/tank bred fish you buy have differences to their wild siblings. Because we selectively breed for the best looking, most colourful etc.

How common do you think your albino varieties are in the wild? Your long finned varieties? We find a genetic rarity and breed it into stock (just the same as breeding out undesirable genetics).

I don't personally believe EBJD are a hybrid, simply a colour morph.

Nobody here said that they are a hybrid, but the reality is no one knows with certainty one way or the other.

BTW - many of the albino cichlids found in the hobby, especially African cichlids, are with 100% certainty man made hybrids. It's quite common for commercial farmers that know what they are doing to breed genetic rarity from one genus and/or species to another. I know a commercial breeder in Florida that has been doing just that for 40+ years.
