EBJD & JD
Need some advice. I have had my EBJD for just over a year now and he is about 3.5”. This summer I picked up a female JD from a friend and she is much larger. They live in a community tank where very body gets along just fine.
My problem is after months of flirting and playing the larger female has turned aggressive and attacks Mr. Magoo. (The EBJD). Being that the EBJD is my pride and joy should I remove the JD from the tank or do you think this is normal behavior and I should let it play it self out. Any advice is welcome.

is that a joke? I didn't think anything grew that slow.

Milk, since you seem to be very experienced with fish keeping, I doubt that it's due to the ebjd's living conditions. XP Are you keeping it with any other fish that would likely dominate it and scare it? Are there larger fish nearby that may make it feel threatened to remain small? They shouldn't grow that slowly if you provide proper care. XP Which I'm sure you are doing.

Esse, get rid of that female and try to get a much smaller one, a female that is less than 3/4 his size or around there.

Yes Very slow growth rate “Painfully Slow” I feel I have so much time and worry invested in this guy I hate to loose him.

Never owned a jd or a ebjd, but I doubt they grow that slow.

Its probably do to a number of things, answer some of the questions above and we might get an answer from it.

Dorado, Thanks for the advice, I think I will follow through it. It’s a shame the female is a good looking fish.

what else do you have in there and how big is the tank? have you stunted his growth?

125 gallon tank. Filtration is a sump loaded with bio balls and rings with a 125W UV powered by a mag 350. Also the overflows are packed with bio balls and padding sponge etc at the top.
Tank mates are (here we go flame throwers) 1 Oscar, 1 CK, 3 Clown Loaches, 2 Tin foil barbs. Yes big fish but he gets along with all, The Oscar would try to protect him during attacks. Funny thing even when the loaches are bickering the Oscar would break it up to keep the peace. Weekly water changes of 45 gal and 15 gal every other week.

Food is probably the biggest influence. That and weak EBJD genes. Protien rich foods such as Brine shrimp, bloodworms, and also Hikari Cichlid Bio Gold+ all work wonders.
